Deep Dive: Maternal Brain Changes
How pregnancy and early motherhood reshape the brain
Pregnancy changes far more than the body. Research has found measurable changes in brain structure and network organisation during pregnancy and the postnatal period. These changes may influence attention, emotional sensitivity, social awareness, the developing relationship with your baby and even how you experience your own sense of self.
We are beginning to understand much more about the maternal brain, but very little of this information reaches women during ordinary antenatal preparation. We are taught about due dates, nappies and feeding. We are rarely told that becoming a mother is also a profound neurological and psychological transition.
In this free prerecorded masterclass, I translate the emerging neuroscience into language that makes sense and explore what it may mean for the lived experience of pregnancy and early motherhood.
This Masterclass is for you if:
- You’re pregnant or in early motherhood and curious about what is happening within your brain.
- You’ve noticed changes in your attention, sensitivity, emotions or sense of identity.
- You want to understand “baby brain” as something more complex than becoming forgetful.
- You’re interested in how the relationship between a mother and baby develops over time.
- You want evidence-informed information without being told there is one correct way to feel or become a mother.
What you’ll learn:
- What current research tells us about maternal-brain changes during pregnancy and after birth.
- How hormones, experience and caring for a baby may contribute to parental neuroplasticity.
- Why changes in attention and sensitivity may be part of adaptation rather than evidence that your brain is failing.
- How repeated moments of interaction help the relationship between you and your baby develop.
- How stress, support and your wider environment can affect the transition into motherhood.
- Gentle, practical ways to support your nervous system and your developing relationship with your baby.
Why this matters
Understanding the maternal brain won’t make every part of motherhood easy. It can, however, give you a more accurate and compassionate way to understand what is happening.
You are not becoming a less capable version of your former self. Your brain and nervous system are adapting to an enormous biological, emotional and relational transition.
That transition will not look or feel the same for every woman. Bonding may be immediate or gradual. Increased sensitivity can feel meaningful, overwhelming or both. Understanding the science creates space for that complexity without turning it into another standard mothers are expected to meet.
This masterclass brings together my training as a Parental Brain Educator, current research and my lived experience of early motherhood.
Whether you are pregnant or already finding your way through motherhood, it will help you look at this transition with more context, curiosity and compassion.
